The weight of the child has worried the parents since birth. When we received the news that someone had brought a child into the world, we asked, "And how many pounds does the baby have?". The weight of the baby is a sign of health.
"Studies conducted by the Institute for the Protection of the Mother and Child (IOMC) on representative samples show that the average birth weight of children in our country is 3,200 grams. This is lower than international standards, according to which the average birth weight should be approximately 3,400 grams, "explains primary pediatric physician Rodica Nanu, IOMC scientific secretary. The low birth weight of children in our country is caused by the poor quality of nutrition in intrauterine life.
When assessing the weight of a child it is very important to consider that each has its own rate of growth. In addition, weight refers to the waist of the child. All this is also appreciated according to the genetic determination, that is, the traits inherited from the parents.
According to Dr. Rodica Nanu, "parents should not believe that a child of 3,000 grams at birth is abnormal. It falls within normal limits, even if it is below the average weight of children in Romania." At 3 months of age, the average weight is 5,000 grams. Newborns weighing between 4,800 and 5,400 grams are developed within normal limits. At the age of one year, the average weight is around 9,500-10,000 grams. The weight of the child should be monitored permanently. If a child has a normal weight, and after a while it drops suddenly it means that something is happening with him. Doesn't he get the same nutrition as before? Is it neglected? He's sick?
A well cared child, starting with the right nutrition, frequent walks, daily bath (hydrotherapy method) and continuing with the love of the family, grows harmoniously. The diet will include all dietary principles: fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, eggs, cereals.
"The families in our country do not know what to offer the children food. The excess of flour is the order of the day, and for the school the parent prefers to give the child money to buy from the kiosk snacks than to wash a apple or to prepare a healthy snack, "observes Dr. Rodica Nanu.
Childhood obesity is also a problem in Romania, where carbonated drinks and fast-food are very successful among children.
At the age of 3, when the child goes to kindergarten, the average normal weight is around 14 kg. The limits are between 11.8 kg and 16.8 kg. At 6-7 years of age, starting school, a normal child has from 16 kg to 27 kg, the average being 19 kg.
In class I there was a high percentage of weak children, a phenomenon put on account of the effort to adapt to school or to change their eating habits. At the same time, the number of fat children has increased. Conclusion: the number of those with normal weight was reduced.
